Richard Holbrooke Remembered For China, Bosnia, Afghanistan

Richard Holbrooke: President Barack Obama may have known special diplomatic adviser to AfPak Richard Holbrooke for a short time, but as world leaders remembered the statesman, he had perhaps the most poignant memory of the service in his memory.

Obama noted that when he first met Holbrooke, the man had tears in his eyes and wanted to keep the United States in a strong position because of its moral achievements.

He had done so as a very ambitious and very strongheaded diplomat who wasn't opposed to cajoling, shouting or following leaders until they agreed, reports the AFP.

But in doing so, Holbrooke left his mark on a number of world conflicts.

He helped continue the normalization of relations with China, helped the former Yugoslavia reach a Ceasefire, and had been working with the Pakistanis during the War in Afghanistan.

It was there that he became weakened, eventually dying of a tear in his heart that took place in a meeting at the State Department in December. He was 69.
