Chicago : Intent can offset the strict letter of the law, as opponents of former White House Chief of Staff and Illinois Congressman Rahm Emanuel found out when they tried to contest his Chicago residency.
Although Emanuel had been in Washington DC for two years assisting President Barack Obama, the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners agreed that Emanuel had never planned on staying in Washington, and had expected to come back to Chicago after a couple of years.
That should pave the way for Emanuel to be the first non-Daley mayor of Chicago, or at least run for the office.
Except that it isn't.
Some of his competitors are so vehemently opposed to a man with a national pedigree coming back that they plan on appealing to the Illinois Supreme Court, according to the Star-Telegram.
But it may be much ado over nothing. Chicago remains a city with a strong political machine, and some long-time Democratic operatives consider Emanuel an interloper.
Meeks Drops Out, but no Consensus Candidate in Mayoral Race
The Reverend James Meeks has dropped out of the Chicago Mayoral Race. Carol Mosely-Braun, Meeks, and Danny Davis met earlier this week, presumably in an attempt to unite behind a consensus Candidate. Meeks’ statement of explanation for ending his campaign was “I have chosen to lead by example”. He made no mention of his earlier gaffe, when he said that the only minority that should be able to partake of city minority set-asides should be black-owned firms. Mosley-Braun sa...

Chicago seen as likely 2012 Obama HQ
WASHINGTON -- The White House says President Barack Obama has not made a decision on where to locate his re-election headquarters for 2012, but observers expect the campaign to return to its 2008 base: Chicago.
Such a decision would buck recent history. Every two-term president in the last 30 years -- George W. Bush, Bill Clinton and Ronald Reagan -- set up re-election campaign offices near the White House or in suburban Virginia.
A key factor favoring Chicago's selection is the anti-Washingto...

State Senator Reverend James Meeks drops out of Mayoral race
After his statement that only blacks should be considered as Minorities, he still hasn't stopped inserting his foot into this mouth. "The word 'minority' from our standpoint should mean African-American," he said on a recording of the broadcastr "I don't think women, Asians and Hispanics should be able to use that title." "That's why our numbers cannot improve, because we use women, Asians, and Hispanics, who are not People of Color, who are not people who have been discriminated against. H...
