Rahm Could Run Chicago Even Though He Was In DC

Chicago : Intent can offset the strict letter of the law, as opponents of former White House Chief of Staff and Illinois Congressman Rahm Emanuel found out when they tried to contest his Chicago residency.

Although Emanuel had been in Washington DC for two years assisting President Barack Obama, the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners agreed that Emanuel had never planned on staying in Washington, and had expected to come back to Chicago after a couple of years.

That should pave the way for Emanuel to be the first non-Daley mayor of Chicago, or at least run for the office.

Except that it isn't.

Some of his competitors are so vehemently opposed to a man with a national pedigree coming back that they plan on appealing to the Illinois Supreme Court, according to the Star-Telegram.

But it may be much ado over nothing. Chicago remains a city with a strong political machine, and some long-time Democratic operatives consider Emanuel an interloper.
