What Could Possibly Be More Awkward Than Apologizing For Messing Up A Graveyard?
Not a lot of things come to mind, but that's exactly what Deputy Mayor Stephen Goldsmith had to do after what happened to Washington Cemetery in Midwood after the post-Christmas Snowpocalypse. According to our Jake Pearson, who spoke with Brooklyn City Councilman David Greenfield, Goldsmith offered blanket regret for the mess during an hourlong meeting at City Hall today. "There was an overall Apology. We went through everything over the past 10 days: From the late clean up, to gravest...

Grayson, who lost a bid last year for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate, said in a statement that he will resign his position as Secretary of State shortly before Jan. 31. Kerri Richardson, spokeswoman for Gov. Steve Beshear, said the Governor had no immediate word on whom he will appoint to serve the remaining 11 months of Grayson’s term. DOJ subpoenas Twitter records of several WikiLeaks volunteers
Last night, Birgitta Jónsdóttir -- a former Wikileaks volunteer and current member of the Icelandic Parliament -- announced (on Twitter) that she had been notified by Twitter that the DOJ had served a Subpoena demanding information "about all my tweets and more since November 1st 2009." Several news outlets, including The Guardian, wrote about Jónsdóttir's announcement. What hasn't been reported is that the Subpoena served on Twitter -- which...
Manhattan BP Scott Stringer: 'Snow Way NYC Should Screw Up The Next Blizzard
The first snowflakes are flying here in Manhattan, and Borough Prez Scott Stringer has just written to Deputy Mayor Stephen Goldsmith to say that if the weather outside's going to be frightful, the city's response better damn be delightful. The full letter appears below, but the upshot is this: He who ignores history is doomed to be a snowed-in dope. (That's my paraphrasing, of course. Stringer's a little more polite about it.) Along with Mayor Bloomberg and Sanitation Commissio...

Krugman, Olbermann And The Race To Explain The Unexplainable
In the horrifying shooting of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords that already left six others dead, one would hope that in times of such tragedy, those who disagree politically could come together and realize how trivial their disagreements are in the grand scheme of life. Instead, there is an uncomfortable eagerness amongst many to find someone to blame for the actions of a senseless lunatic.
Already some are racing to suggest the Tea Party, Sarah Palin and others are partially responsible. As a...

Trey Grayson, the Kentucky Secretary of State and establishment favorite against Rand Paul in last year's GOP Senate primary, is leaving the Bluegrass to take over the Institute of Politics (IOP) at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government.
In announcing the decision, the IOP called Grayson "one of the nation’s top new political leaders."
Despite his loss in the Senate primary, many Kentucky Republicans were hoping Grayson would run for AG this year against Jack Conway, the Democ...

Norfolk city manager, in final week, seeks quiet exit
NORFOLK
Regina V.K. Williams won't be attending her final City Council meeting Tuesday as Norfolk's city manager.
There will be no office party or a farewell of any sort. She has been meeting with former Council Members and others to say farewell privately. But she wants to leave with a whisper instead of the clamor that surrounded her office over the past year.
"No balloons or cake for me," she said.
Williams ends her 12-year tenure as Norfolk's highest-paid and highest-ranking admini...
Magic Matzoh Ball Soup Gives Commuters Parking Reprieve
L.A. Nolan's flickr
Last month, we said it'd take a Christmas Eve revelation to get Mayor Bloomberg to renege on his plans to increase parking prices across the city. But it turns out that all it took was a bowl of matzoh ball soup! Bloomberg announced yesterday that the city would hold off on increasing parking rates in the outer boroughs from 75 cents to a dollar an hour. And credit is being given to City Councilman James Vacca for slipping whatever potion he did into Bloomberg's soup.

Tax Cuts From 70s Confront Brown Again in California
Source: The New York Times
Los Angeles The last time Jerry Brown was Governor of California, voters passed Proposition 13, drastically slashing local property taxes and constraining lawmakers from raising any other taxes. Mr. Brown first fought the proposition but then executed it with gusto and sent billions of dollars from the state to School Districts and counties to help offset the lost revenues.
That may be a decision that Mr. Brown has come to regret, as his career has come full circle ...

David Chiu swaps career for brief political peace
Politics is a tricky, ruthless business. You need a sharp mind, an eye for strategy and an ability to make the tough choices quickly.
But Board of Supervisors President David Chiu is making it look way too hard.
Chiu's a bright fellow with a lofty education (law degree and master's from Harvard). He knows the city, listens to all sides of an issue, and will even sit down for a drink with reporters.
I like the guy. His rise to prominence in the city - from elected supervisor, to being elected ...

Bloomberg and the Third Term Curse
There was a recent article in the NY Daily News covering the plummeting Approval Ratings due to the (lack of) blizzard response earlier this week. Things aren't looking good for Bloomie, "Bloomberg admitted City Hall was in the dark about the extent of the crisis. Sources said he didn't know there was a 911 backlog of 1,300 calls until he was asked about it at a Press Conference." The Mayor's third term has been particularly abysmal, though this is part of a tradition that other New York City ...
Bloomberg Declares War on Snow
As you may have noticed, the snow is back. You can see it out there now, a bunch of fluffy white flakes drifting gracefully from the sky onto the shoulders of people hurrying to work and onto the tongues of giggling Children. It looks so innocent. But as we in New York City recently learned, snow around here can get real ugly real fast: One minute you're looking at a Winter Wonderland, the next you're immobile in a frozen hellscape. But this time, Mayor Bloomberg wants you to know, he is prepa...

San Jose's redevelopment agency selling land to buy property needed for proposed MLB ballpark
San Jose moved a step closer toward a proposed downtown ballpark Friday, when officials announced they will sell five city-owned parcels, using the proceeds to pay for land needed to complete the stadium plan.
"This is a move forward to assure residents that the city is on track with Baseball," said Harry Mavrogenes, chief of the San Jose Redevelopment Agency.
The plan comes even as doubts about the agency's future continue to mount, following revelations last fall that plunging Property Tax ass...
