Hospital : The Maine ski lift that released several cars and sent the riders plummeting to the ground Tuesday apparently had
problems
other than the winds.

Workers who had been trying to realign the ski lift cable had stopped to get riders off the lift when the cable jumped its track, sending the cars falling to the ground.
The lift had been shut down due to high winds earlier that day, but had been cleared for operations.

The ski resort said about 20 minutes after the lift reopened, two maintenance workers noticed the cable was out of place. They attempted to fix it, but couldn't, and were about to shut down the lift when the cable derailed.
State investigators said that wind played a role, but did not rule out other contributing factors. The 35-year-old life had recently passed an inspection, but was known to be vulnerable to wind long before the cable snapped Tuesday, sending eight riders to the Hospital. A fresh, fluffy layer of snow prevented more patrons from being injured.
