Jon Stewart: Jon Stewart last night took on Fox News' "veiled criticism" of the Tucson memorial service.

Pundits from both side of the political aisle praised President Barack Obama's Wednesday memorial Speech for about "two or three minutes," Stewart said, before allowing "politics, points scoring and pettiness to kick off its reunion tour." [TPM SLIDESHOW: 'We Will Heal': The Memorial In Tucson] Fox's Brit Hume said the Native American blessing offered at the memorial was "most peculiar."

Stewart rips Fox News for partisan criticism of Tucson memorial
But that's exactly what happened at Fox News, and Comedy Central's Jon Stewart was there to call them out Thursday. Conservative pundits "praised the president's Speech for nearly two to three minutes before allowing politics, point scoring and pettiness to kick off its reunion tour," Stewart observed. "You do have to question the timing of it," Conservative Blogger Michelle Malkin told Fox News only minutes after the service ended. "No, no, you don't have to. You are not a primitive [multi-cell...
The Tucson Memorial Blessing, Explained
Wednesday’s memorial service at the University of Arizona in Tucson has faced a lot of criticism, particularly from the right. Many commentators noted the raucous attitude of many in attendance (there was much more cheering than one might expect at so solemn an event) and the T-shirts that were handed out (for which the university itself has admitted responsibility). Perhaps the most-remarked-upon aspect of the proceeding was the American Indian blessing given by Carlos Gonzales, an associ...
Jon Stewart tackles memorial service critics
Jon Stewart TACKLES MEMORIAL SERVICE CRITICS.... If you missed "The Daily Show" last night, there was a great segment on the media reactions to the memorial service in Tucson, and complaints about everything from the audience's reaction to the benediction to the seating arrangements.
For example, Brian Kilmeade of "Fox & Friends" complained about the opening blessing, which Kilmeade found as a "very strange" way to "open the show." Stewart explained, "It's not a 'show.' He didn't 'open up a sh...

Fox News began criticizing Tucson memorial even before it ended
Stumble This! But that's exactly what happened at Fox News, even before the memorial service had ended: a reality difficult for Comedy Central's Jon Stewart to stomach. "No, no, ...

Jon Stewart mocks media for criticizing Arizona memorial crowd (Video)
Most in the media had fairly positive reviews for President Obama Speech at the Arizona memorial service two days ago, but many commentators took issue with the crowd. Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Brit Hume, and others criticized the crowd for cheering too loudly and having too much of a “pep rally” attitude at the service. In his episode last night, Jon Stewart mocked political commentators who had the gall to demand the Tucson crowd mourn the way they wanted. As Stewart i...
Too Soon! Jon Stewart Ridicules Partisan Media Criticism Of Tuscon Memorial
Last night Barack Obama was the Keynote Speaker at the Memorial Service held for the Victims of the Arizona shooting tragedy that occurred last weekend, and by and large, received rave reviews from both left and right opinion media pundits. Until the next morning, in which the 24 hour News Media “conflictanator” started to find reasons to critique the previous evenings proceedings, at least in the eyes of Jon Stewart. Tonight The Daily Show opened with proper praise of the “Ins...
Pawlenty, Stewart spar over rhetoric
Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty sparred with The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart Wednesday, arguing that Conservatives are right to warn of government encroachment onto personal liberties.
Pawlenty, a likely Presidential Candidate, said government is “crowding into more space” that used to be reserved for individuals, private markets, charities, faith organizations and entrepreneurs.

Open Thread: Reaction to Last Night's Tucson Memorial
Last night's memorial for the Victims of Saturday's Tucson massacre was moving, if strange at times. Below the fold are some reactions to the event. Mark Tapscott has a fantastic post on the bizarre Pantheistic religious ceremony at the outset, which honored "Mother Earth" and "Father Sky." Strikingly absent were any Judeo-Christian clergymen. Tapscott ponders the strange - and seeminly hypocritical - concern for "Separation of Church and State" that was for...
Stewart rebuts Fox's strange criticism of Tucson's memorial service
As Jon Stewart says, there was universal praise for President Obama's message at the Tucson memorial service...at least there was for about 2 or 3 minutes. That's when cable mouthpieces started attacking the event for everything from how the crowd reacted to the choice of an opening blessing. To those who criticized the service as a "pep rally," Stewart asked if they'd ever been to an Irish wake. "I've never been sadder and laughed harder in my life."

Jon Stewart mocks the partisian media criticism of the Tucson Memorial Service. Mediaite's description:
Stewart takes the high road and allows the words of his subjects damn themselves with partisan sniping completely at odds with what seemed to be the whole point of Obama’s Speech.

Jon Stewart To Tim Pawlenty: 'Why Is The Right So Fearful Of Tyranny?' (VIDEO)
"Why is the Right so fearful of tyranny now when George Bush expanded executive power so greatly?" Jon Stewart asked Former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty this question last night on "The Daily Show." Pawlenty appeared on Stewart's show to discuss his new book, "Courage to Stand: An American Story," but the conversation quickly dove deep into a debate over political Rhetoric.
About the Right's recent attacks on the current administration, Stewart asked: "Is this a cynical attempt to whip up ...

Jon Stewart On Verizon iPhone: Finally I Can Make Phone Calls! (VIDEO)
Jon Stewart last night celebrated the news that the iPhone will soon be available on Verizon's network, relieved that he'll finally be able to make actual calls with his cell phone.
"For the past three or four years, those of us in the iPhone community have sacrificed one thing for the ability to carry around every photograph we've ever taken, or song we've ever listened to, or home video or compass: the ability to make phone calls," Stewart said. "For years, struggling with the world's most p...

Diana Butler Bass: Gabby Opened Her Eyes and We Should Too
"Gabby opened her eyes."
When President Obama uttered these simple words, the crowd at the Tucson memorial service cheered wildly. "Gabby opened her eyes."
Four simple words. Four very spiritual words.
Congresswoman Giffords was shot at the beginning of the Christian season called Epiphany. This year, Epiphany lasts until March 8, the day before Ash Wednesday. The word, epiphany, means "manifestation," "revelation," or "unveiling." As it follows Christmas, it is the time of the year in which C...

Native-American Prayer to Father Sky and Mother Earth Opens Tucson Memorial Service Video 1/12/11
Here is video of the unusual opening “prayer” at the Tucson Memorial last night, offered by a University of Arizona Professor. The professor’s prayer was introduced as a “Native-American Blessing.” He opened the program by praying to “Father Sky,” “Mother Earth,” and even the four doors of the building. Before he finished, he had prayed for just about everyone and everything - including the “four-footed” creatures, and the...
Jon Stewart's Extended and Uncensored Interview with Gov. Tim Pawlenty
Former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty returned to The Daily Show last night for an insightful discussion about Rhetoric and finding real solutions in our hostile political climate. It was such a calm and thoughtful chat, I almost can't figure out which one of these guys I'm supposed to compare to Hitler. Anyway, the interview went long, but you can now see it in its entirety right here.

Thoughtful Discourse? Pawlenty Says U.S. Tilts Everyday, A Little Bit More Toward Tyranny
The shootings in Tucson last weekend happened to coincide with former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty’s (R) media tour to promote his new book. In various interviews, Pawlenty has discussed the role violent Rhetoric played in Tucson and in politics. While the former Governor said that the Tucson shooter is solely responsible for his actions, Pawlenty acknowledged that political Rhetoric could be toned down. “I think we can all benefit from a more thoughtful discourse,” he sai...
Huckleberry Finn: Slave, Nigger, The N Word, and The Daily Show
“Who could be offended at the Adventures of Huckleberry Turtle and Nigger Rabbit?”
Last night, The Daily Show took on the Huck Finn Controversy, and the whitewashing of our history which, as I mentioned last week in connection with the failed reading of the Constitution, is merely an attempt to make white folks comfortable with the nasty bits in our history. Rather than learning from our mistakes, we just ignore them. In some cases, we completely erase history fro...
T-Paw's Dilemma.
During the 2008 campaign, Mike Huckabee used to describe himself this way: "I'm a conservative, but I'm not angry about it." That wouldn't be an inaccurate description of Tim Pawlenty , the former Minnesota Governor now ramping up his Presidential Campaign. The problem is that the Conservative Base is angry, and winning the Republican nomination may require channeling and playing to that anger. The potential Candidates who are angrier -- Sarah Palin , Newt Gingrich -- have enormous liabilities t...
On Arizona Shooting, Jon Stewart Skirts the Edge of Reason
One question: Who threw the first punch?
Most of us know a disingenuous Apology when we hear one. The sincerity of a mea culpa is generally revealed by whether it is focused upon the offended party or the offensive behavior. Saying “I’m sorry you took it that way” does not fully own up to an offense. Likewise, the inclusion of excuses within an Apology indicates an offender hasn’t fully accepted responsibility for their behavior.
Even so, a less than sincere Apology is ...
