There has been a growing interest among our U.S. clients to compare the opinions and perceptions of Americans to residents in other countries. This prompted me to Recount some methodological issues discussed at a workshop I attended last spring in Switzerland.
The Workshop on Comparative Survey Design and Implementation (CSDI) was a small, international conference of survey methodologists who share a strong interest in cross-cultural, multi-national, and multi-regional research. Gathering...

One Thing . . .
IBM declined? They're doing quite well, thank you, just not in the PC world. Their innovation has never been questioned - they file more Patents every year than any other company in the world. If anything, their vision is sometimes myopic. The real problem with PCs is that the underlying hardware sucks. IBM built the original PCs with Intel 8086 chips instead of the vastly better Motorola 68000 chips because Motorola couldn't guarantee a sufficient supply and Intel could. IBM accepted the...

Keith Jarrett: Lausanne, March 20, 1973, Part 2
Every few years I rediscover a monumental work of improvisation, one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever recorded: Keith Jarrett’s Solo Concerts: Bremen & Lausanne . I first heard this record in a small sushi bar in Tokyo in 1974, and it hasn’t aged; if anything, it’s more moving and profound than ever.
This four-part video playlist is the second half of the Lausanne concert, beginning with Keith going inside the piano. (The sound is slightly better if you switch...

Is Energy Efficiency Blue, Red or Both?
Recently I wrote about how people in six Kansas towns had been motivated to cut their Energy use through intertown competitions. The residents were largely skeptical about the science behind Climate Change but were moved to act by values like thrift and Patriotism. In some cases towns reduced their Energy Consumption by as much as 5 percent over a year, considered a giant drop in this field. So when the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy released its annual scorecard comparing...

Treasury Thumbs Nose at Bloomberg FOIA Request on Citi Guarantees
In Rudy Giuliani’s Second Term as mayor, the famed backer of law n’ order had a great fondness for taking it into his own hands. Groups that wanted to assemble on the steps of City Hall were required to file a notice or petition of some sort. A peculiar ritual would then ensue. The mayor’s office would deny the request, the Group in question would seek a Court order to allow their little Protest to go ahead, and without fail, permission would be granted.
It was a form of...

Insider Selling To Buying Update: 1,169 To 1
2,341-1 ratio. Perhaps even the idiots are getting skittish about owning stocks without having access to the Fed's backstop facilities. Also, keep in mind that the primary dealers have about $ 60 Billion in Bills to repurchase past the End of quarter window dressing. Unfortunately, for the players in the hot potato game, this capital can only come from stock sales.
For those who believe last week's data is an outlier, here is the weekly selling to buying ratio over the past month:
