Did Dupnik miss the red flags on Loughner?
Any cop can tell you whodunnit but it takes a supercop to tell you What It All Means about our political culture. A nagging question: Should supercop maybe have figured out that Loughner was a menace before he gunned down six people outside a Safeway? Remember, this is a guy who was so palpably disturbed that more than one of his classmates told their Professor that they feared for their lives. He had five separate run-ins with the Campus Police at his community college, and as Moe Lane helpfu...

The best of the best of state-based political blogs -- as of April 2009. Another Democrat shamelessly politicizing the assassination attempt on Congresswoman Giffords: James Clyburn edition
I am disturbed by the events that happened in Tucson on Saturday. I am even more disturbed (and disappointed) by the events that have happened since the massacre on Saturday. I am disturbed that the media immediately jumped in to politicize the whole gruesome affair. Trying to blame Governor Palin and the Tea Party for this crazed killer’s actions is a new low (even for the main stream media). “ I’m disturbed but not surprised” ...
Report: Sheriff Knew About Loughners Actions & Previous Threats Failed to Act
There are now accusations that Dupnik knew about the previous threats by leftwing pothead Jared Loughner and did nothing to protect the Tucson community from this homicidal young man. The sheriff has been editorializing and politicizing the event since he took the podium to report on the incident. His blaming of radio personalities and Bloggers is a pre-emptive strike because Mr. Dupnik knows this tragedy lays at his feet and his office. Six people died on his watch and he could have prevented i...
Randall Amster: First Amendment Remedies: Hey Sarah, Refudiate This
Despite the temptation to join the grief-stricken chorus of blame, I do not believe that flame-fanners and spleen-suppliers like Sarah Palin, et al., are responsible for the tragic events in Tucson. Rather, the incendiary rhetorical devices they've used -- from gun sights over Congressional Districts to the invocation of "Second Amendment remedies" as viable tactics for change -- make these demagogues irresponsible about the consequences of their allusions. Words do have power, and thus should...
Did Jared Loughner's Family Barricade Their Arizona Home During His Court Appearance?
Jared Lee Loughner, the alleged Arizona shooter, was in court this morning for a preliminary trial and is being described by CNN as "very polite." He wore a tan Prison jumpsuit and was chained at the feet and ankles. The judge engaged Loughner and asked him to confirm his identity and he responded, "Yes. I am Jared Lee Loughner." The preliminary hearing took about 15 minutes. When the judge talked about the Murder of John McCarthy Roll, the Federal Judge that was shot, Loughner took a c...

Georgia rep. criticizes Arizona sheriff's remarks
A Georgia Republican on Monday criticized Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik for linking Saturday's shooting in Arizona with hostile political Rhetoric. Rep. Jack Kingston of Savannah said there is no evidence the shooting was politically motivated. Instead, it simply looks like the work of a deranged gunman, he said. "I don't see any link whatsoever at this point between vitriolic discourse and someone plowing down his fellow citizens," Kingston said in a telephone interview with The Associate...
Arizona Massacre Prompts Political 'Cheap Shots'
When Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords collapsed outside the Safeway in Tucson Saturday morning, felled by a hail of bullets that killed six and wounded another 13 innocent people that had come to see her, some were quick to claim that the carnage was the product not merely of the tortured mind and trigger-happy fingers of the alleged shooter, 22-year-old Jared Lee Loughner. Rather, many on the American Left said the horror could be traced to the malign influence of American Conservatives; members...

WASHINGTON | Mon Jan 10, 2011 4:51pm EST
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Jared Lee Loughner, the 22-year-old Arizona man charged with killing six people and injuring 12 others, including Representative Gabrielle Giffords, clearly scared more than a few people.
Instructors at his college, as well as friends and neighbors, have said they expressed concerns about Loughner's behavior in the months before he opened fire at a gathering at a Tucson Shopping Mall on Sa...

Video of the Day: AZ Sheriff Tells Megyn Kelly He Has No Proof Vitol Caused Shooting
Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik, a Democrat, used the news conference announcing the shooting of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords as a partisan platform, blaming the deadly act on “vitriolic Rhetoric.” In an interview on Sunday, the sheriff admitted he has no proof that rhetoric of any kind caused the shooting. Listen to the way he drops the Left’s talking points that foreign powers are financing conservative television commercials, and Republicans are “trying to bl...
Judges Purpose in Seeing Giffords Could Be Legally Significant
Was U.S. District Court Judge John M. Roll just being sociable when he dropped by an appearance by Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) in Tucson on Saturday, or was he planning to discuss official business? Does it even matter, given the horror of that morning? Yes, it could matter, legally speaking. At first glance, Roll’s state of mind might appear irrelevant, given the tragedy that unfolded on Saturday morning, when Roll was shot dead and Giffords gravely wounded in a rampage that killed ...

Jared Lee Loughner: Gaze Into The Face of Insanity
PHOENIX -- The nation got its first look on Monday at the 22-year-old loner accused of trying to assassinate Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. Jared Loughner, head shaved, a cut above the right temple and his hands cuffed, scanned a packed courtroom and sat down. His attorney, who defended Oklahoma City bomber Timothy Mcveigh and "Unabomber" Ted Kaczynski, whispered to him. The judge asked Loughner if he understood that he could get life in Prison -- or the death penalty -- for killing Federal Judge John...

Additional charges are expected. The suspect has an experienced defender of high-profile criminals ...
Americans Favor Automatic Weapons Ban, Wary Of 'Gun Control'
WASHINGTON -- Will the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) and 20 others in Arizona turn Public Opinion in favor of tougher Gun Control measures? The evidence is mixed at best. While Public Opinion has generally turned against stricter gun-control measures over the last twenty years, majorities continue to support greater restrictions on the sort of automatic weapon used in the Tucson shootings.
For the last 20 years, the Gallup organization has tracked whether Americans "feel that t...
