An interesting poll from Gallup; reading it, I was reminded of Marco Rubio’s successful Senate bid in Florida, and how the theme of American Exceptionalism seemed to drive a deep emotional connection between the Candidate and audiences…

Poll: Does Obama think U.S. is exceptional?
Washington (CNN) - The vast majority of Americans see the United States as exceptional, according to a new National Poll. But a Gallup Poll released Wednesday also indicates that nearly four in ten say they believe President Barack Obama doesn't hold this same view. Eight out of ten people questioned in the survey say that based on the country's history and constitution, the U.S. has a unique character that makes it the greatest country in the world. The poll suggests there's no partisan divide ...
More Than a Third of Americans Doubt Obama Believes in U.S. 'Exceptionalism'
While 80 percent of Americans think that America "has a unique character that makes it the greatest country in the world," more than a third say President Obama does not share that belief, according to a USA Today/Gallup Poll conducted Dec. 10-12. Gallup's poll on the concept often referred to as "U.S. exceptionalism" says that Americans rank Obama significantly below three other modern presidents in terms of whether Obama subscribes to the idea. Fifty-eight percent of those surveyed believe he ...
Poll: Americans believe in American exceptionalism, not as sure about Obama
In a new Gallup Poll, 80 percent of those surveyed say they believe the United States, because of its history and Constitution, "has a unique character that makes it the greatest country in the world." But a significantly smaller number, 58 percent, think President Obama also believes in American Exceptionalism, while 37 percent specifically say he does not believe America is exceptional. More Republicans than Democrats believe in American exceptionalism. Gallup found that 91 percent of Republic...
Taking Exception to American Exceptionalism
American Exceptionalism is currently at the heart of a great debate over the country’s future and, according to one presidential hopeful at least, will be “one of the two or three deciding issues in 2012.” USA Today devoted its cover story yesterday to the storm of Controversy that President Obama’s off-the-cuff remarks on the subject in Strasbourg last year continue to generate. According to a Gallup Poll commissioned by USA Today for the story, three quarters of Americans fear th
Obamas Approval Rating With Moderate Republicans Rises 9 Points
Yahoo Politics:
President Obama remains hugely unpopular with Republicans, but a new Gallup Poll finds that he’s gained a little ground among moderate members of the GOP.
According to Gallup, Obama’s Approval Rating among moderate Republicans jumped 9 percentage points in the last two weeks, to 29 percent. That’s still a dismal number, but as Gallup notes, that’s the highest number Obama has banked among swing Republicans since May. Gallup credits the bump, in part, to ...
Americas place in the world to play part in 2012 elections
WASHINGTON — It might as well be the national anthem: America the Exceptional. From the days of the Revolution to The Moon landing two centuries later, the idea that the United States is different from and better than anyplace else on Earth has rallied its citizens and propelled its aspirations. Eighty percent of Americans in a USA Today/Gallup Poll say they believe the country has a unique character and unrivaled standing — a higher degree of national unanimity than on any current p...

Pollsters beware: phone cord cutting still en vogue
By Jon Cohen
One trend that continues unabated is the growing number of Americans who don't have home telephones, according to newly released government data.
A report published Tuesday by the Center for Disease Control shows fully 25 percent of adults now have only cellphones. The proportion of "cell-only" adults is up two percentage points from the previous six month period, and is about double what it wa...
40% of Americans Still Believe in Creationism
At least things are moving in the right direction, although the numbers remain depressing. According to the latest Gallup Poll, four out of ten Americans still believe that God created man in his image about 10,000 years ago: A small minority of Americans hold the “Secular Evolution” view that humans evolved with no influence from God—but the number has risen from 9% in 1982 to 16% today. At the same time, the 40% of Americans who hold the “creationist” view that Go...

A new Gallup Poll is out showing that 40 percent of Americans believe that "God created human beings pretty much in their present form at one time within the last 10,000 years or so" while only 16 percent believe Evolution happened with guidance from God and 38 percent believe "God guided [the] process" of evolution. Among the poll's findings was that a full 37 percent with a college degree and a full 22 percent with a postgraduate degree believe in creation. Yet today, M...

For many, Christmas a non-religious holiday
More than nine in 10 Americans celebrate Christmas — even if they’re atheists, agnostics or believers in non-Christian faiths such as Judaism and Islam, according to two new surveys. But the surveys also indicate that while most call Christmas a holy day that’s primarily religious, their actions speak volumes to the contrary. Many skip church, omit Jesus and zero in on the egg nog, according to the polls done by LifeWay Research, a Nashville-based Christian research organizat...

Top Stories of 2010: Haiti Earthquake, Gulf Oil Spill
Two major disasters – the Earthquake in Haiti and the oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico – captured the public’s attention more than any other major stories in 2010, but Americans also kept a consistent eye on the nation’s struggling economy.
In mid-January, 60% of the public said they were following news about the horrific Earthquake in Haiti very closely. In mid-July, a comparable 59% said they were following news very closely about the major oil leak in the Gulf that sta...
No Labels, No Apology
Within a week after its official launch, the No Labels movement—which I helped found—has accomplished a hitherto unimaginable feat: It has united a bitterly divided commentariat. Tribunes of left and right have issued issue denunciations and pronounced anathemas. Polarization, they say, is a wonderful thing, and those who would weaken it are at best deluded and naïve. Civility is a euphemism for the prissy repression of uninhibited democratic discourse, and the self-appointed s...
Burt Folsom understands economic history
One of the greatest crisis facing academia today is the one dimensional perspectives that are pervasive in virtually all disciplines. Consensus historians seem to rule the day as Professors and our universities consistently fail to offer or even consider the various interpretations one can have on issues throughout academia and in the social sciences in particular. Historians tend to march in a lock step Fashion. Presidents who advocated and supported the consolidation of central power are ...
OPEN THREAD -- What do you think ______?
This is an OPEN THREAD....so go ahead, post your thought! (If you can't think of what to post, answer this, how did the Republicans do during the Lame Duck Congress? how did the Democrats do during the Lame Duck Congress?) The Democrats and Republicans did equally well with each one getting something. I guess one could say they got to bake their cake and eat it,too. Democrats got Repeal of DADT and the GOP blocked the DREAM Act. GOP got extension of the Bush Tax Cuts and Democrats got income li...

Sarah Palin: Fishing for American Exceptionalism
Watching "Sarah Palin's Alaska" is like stepping back in time -- not to a time when Americans lived off the land and the sea, but to a time when our desire to be #1 was celebrated and not scorned.
A recent episode of "SP's Alaska" was about Sarah Palin's oldest son Track trying to prove to his father Todd that he was worthy of taking over the #1 fishing site in Bristol Bay. As Sarah Palin said, "Todd has the #1 site in this area...so Track has to work very, very hard and...
Charles Krauthammer: Obama swindles a comeback with 3Rs (video)
"He's the guy who swindled the Republicans into giving him a $1 Trillion stimulus," acknowledged Charles Krauthammer, speaking of President Obama's come-back six weeks following a midterm shellacking. In that quote, Krauthammer parses his words carefully and though he did not call Obama a swindler out right it's not a far leap to go from one who swindles to a swindler. Krauthammer did actually used the verb "swindled" as in, Shhh, be very, very quiet . Conservatives are h...
Senate passes New START treaty
The Senate ratified the strategic nuclear arms treaty between the United States and Russia on Wednesday, fulfilling President Obama's major Foreign Policy goal for the lame-duck session.
By 71-26, the Senate approved the treaty, known as New START, which Republicans had blocked. A jubilant Vice President Joe Biden announced the results in his role as the Senate's presiding officer.
Top Republicans continued to oppose the treaty, but 13 Republicans crossed over to vote for pact. Fifty-six Democr...
CNN Poll: 56 percent give Obama's lame duck a thumbs up
Washington (CNN) - When it comes to Public Opinion, who's the biggest winner of one of the most productive congressional Lame Duck sessions in years? According to a new national poll, it looks like President Barack Obama is that winner, and his strategy of cooperating with congressional Republican leaders may be the key to his success. A CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey indicates that 56 percent of Americans say they approve of the way Obama's handled the issues that Congress has consider...
Ticket Replay: Voters of all stripes -- even Republicans -- more receptive to Bill Clinton now than Obama
During the Holiday Season, as in years past, The Ticket is republishing some of our favorite items from the previous political year. This story was originally published on Oct. 19, 2010
No wonder the Real Good Talker has been rather snappish at the lectern lately.
Turns out, the husband of the competitive woman he beat in the primaries and didn't want as his VP partner in 2008 is more influential on the stump these days -- even among some Republicans -- than the Big Guy who won the Oval Of...
